First Casino in Las Vegas: The Flamingo Story
The Flamingo holds the distinction of being the first major resort casino to open on the Las Vegas Strip. Built by mobster Bugsy Siegel and financed by the New York syndicate, the property debuted on 26 December 1946. Its opening night featured Jimmy Durante and the Xavier Cugat orchestra, setting a precedent for entertainment that continues today.
Although the original structure was modest, later expansions added hotel towers, multiple restaurants, and a 15-acre garden featuring live Chilean flamingos. The property changed hands several times before being acquired by Caesars Entertainment, which invested in modern room renovations and a new race and sports book.
